In response to the rising threat of cholera in some communities, the Environmental Health Unit initiated a public sensitization campaign which was aimed at equipping residents with essential knowledge and practices to prevent the spread of the disease. The campaign was launched to help educate the public on cholera prevention, proper hygiene practices, and the importance of clean water and sanitation.
Cholera, a life-threatening disease caused by contaminated water and food, poses significant health risks, particularly in areas with poor sanitation. As part of efforts to curb the spread of cholera, the department conducted a lengthy discussion on the proper way of washing the hands with soap under running water. They taught the residents that the best way to wash the hands is to first wet the hands with water then apply the soap on the hands and then rinse it off.
The Environmental Health Unit also encourage the purchasing of Veronica buckets by chop bars, restaurants, public washrooms, institutional washrooms and household washrooms to prevent the spread of the disease.
